Engagement Photo Style - What to wear for your session!

Updated: Aug 1, 2021

- Kelli Morrell is a Wedding Photographer based in St. Louis, Missouri.

It's the heat of summer here in St. Louis, which means that sundresses are everywhere! Here are some of my favorite dresses (with some pants included) to consider when planning your engagement session outfits. When planning your engagement photo session, keep in mind the following style tips:

  • You want to wear something that adds visual interest. For example, a pretty pattern or something with texture.

  • I have you move a lot during engagement sessions, so make sure you pick clothing that isn't too restricting!

  • A dress or flowy top can add beautiful dimension to your photos! Think about how the wind can catch your dress and gently blow it around...trust me, it can make for magical images.

  • Stick with more neutral colors. Avoid really bright colors like orange, yellow, etc...the color cast on your skin can be distracting. It isn't impossible to work with, but a solid shirt in bright yellow may not be the best choice.

  • Your engagement session is special! Plan on 2 or 3 outfits that show your personality...this may include a nicer dress and then a more casual outfit. Spend some time thinking about this and definitely consult with your photographer! Style help is included in my session, so I want to help you if this is something that stumps you.

This may age me, but when I was younger, Abercrombie was the hot spot for jocks and cool girls. I wasn't one of them. However, months ago I asked the good people on Instagram to share their favorite stores and Abercrombie was mentioned more than once. So, I had to take a look again and I'm so glad I did. They grew up a bit and I'm loving their style. They have so many options that would be perfect for engagement photos! A few of my favorites are below!
